Supporting the New Forest Trust

Legacies
Most people will want to remember family and friends in their Will, but increasingly consider leaving a portion of their estate to help others.

The New Forest Trust offers an ideal way to leave a legacy in your Will that will be carefully administered according to your instructions for generations to come. It will associate your name with the Forest you loved forever.

You can choose between leaving a legacy to set up your own fund or to make a donation as described on the previous pages. You should usually consult your solicitor about the exact wording, but please call us as well to discuss your plans. You might like to become a Friend of the New Forest during your lifetime and we would welcome your involvement.

Different kinds of Legacy
There are tax advantages in leaving a legacy to the New Forest Trust and various ways of leaving a legacy as part of your estate. For example:

A Pecuniary Legacy – is a fixed amount specified in your Will. It is free of tax, which adds considerably to the value of your gift.

Gifts of shares or property – are exempt from capital gains tax and qualify for income tax relief, following incentives introduced in the 2000 Budget to encourage gifts to charity.

A Residuary Legacy – is the remaining value of your estate when all other bequests to family and friends have been made.

A Reversionary Legacy – allows the surviving partner to benefit from your estate during his or her lifetime and then for the balance of the estate to be passed to the New Forest Trust.

How does it work?
All gifts to the New Forest Trust will be used exclusively to support charitable work for conservation of the New Forest.

You might like to set up your own fund with the New Forest Trust with a minimum legacy of £10,000. This will be in the name of your choice and you can specify areas or issues to benefit from your fund. For larger funds, normally from £50,000, we can set up a committee including your friends and family to award grants on your behalf.
